- What Do Good Fitness Fitouts Have in Common?
-
Great layout for smooth traffic flow
-
Comfortable change rooms
-
Great water pressure
-
Quality equipment
Commercial gym fitouts should be made for heavy use and be built to last. Choosing cheaper materials may seem like a good idea when you’re looking at initial costs, but you’ll save more money in the long run by future-proofing your gym fitout with the strongest materials.

- Getting the Most From Your Gym Fitout
Total Fitouts can help you make the most of your space through design – we step you through all the considerations you’ll need to make for your gym fitout and business to be a success.
“The better the design, the better the result. There needs to be a natural ‘operational flow’ through the space. Think about a McDonald’s kitchen production line – that space is designed to be as effective and efficient as possible. You want your space as well thought out as a McDonald’s kitchen.” – Peter Zafis, Total Fitouts Surry Hills.
Top 3 important elements in a gym fitout:
-
Lighting – natural is always the best – if you can find a location that has north-facing windows that’s perfect. Otherwise, give the space a natural light feel as much as possible – let it be light and airy. If your space doesn’t have natural light, there are other options – “Lighting is a sweet science – with the right electrical engineering, you can make it feel as though there is natural light.” – Peter Zafis, Total Fitouts Surry Hills
-
Flooring – gyms need to stay clean – all the time. Choose flooring you can clean easily and often – floorboards are a good go-to.
-
Sound – gyms typically require loud energising music, getting the right acoustic sound is important for creating minimal disruption for your neighbours.
-
- Sizing and Space
Before deciding on the space for your gym fitout, we recommend to work backwards to calculate your space vs. profit.
“Think about profitability – how many people do you need per class to make a profit? In particular, the minimum number of people. It might be that if you have 15 people per class you make a profit, while if you only have 12, you’re losing money. It’s a business so you need to think about your bottom line.” Peter Zafis, Total Fitouts Surry Hills
Once you know how many people you aim to have in each class (both the goal number and the minimum number) – then you can move to figuring out how big your studio or gym space needs to be.
When deciding on the space you need for the number of potential customers, also think about:
-
Landing area – where clients sign in and the reception desk
-
Bathrooms, showers and a changing room
-
Lockers or storage
-
Community or kitchen area – somewhere for a water station
-
Space for staff to keep their personal belongings
Our shopfitters will often suggest around 40 sqm for the front landing area or community space, with some kind of feature wall.
